Chartres Cathedral in Chartres, France (Southern facade)

By A Mystery Man Writer

Chartres is truly one of the greatest of all French Gothic cathedrals. Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres is located less than 100 km (about 50 miles) south of Paris and is considered to be one of the finest examples of the "high Gothic" style of architecture. This picture is the rear view of the cathedral. Chartres possesses the "Holy Veil," (Sancta Camisia) a garment belonging to the Virgin Mary. This is a holy relic of the Catholic faith. The existence of an altar dedicated to Mary can be proven as far back as the 6th century. Early pre-Celtic Pagan cultures may have worshipped here from the very beginning of their arrival in this region of Europe. For more information, look at my other pictures, of the Northern facade, the Labyrinth, and the 24 hour clock.
