Why do you say “Roll Down the Windows?”

Can technology be appreciated without the proper perspective? My 13-year old asked me, quite rightly, "Why do you say “roll down” the window in the car?" Without having done it before, it made no sense to him. He lacked perspective and, therefore, takes for granted the technology of power windows.
